My interest in recording reality
started at a pretty young age. When I was a kid, I remember
pestering my mom to borrow her little Kodak camera all the time.
Even back then, I don't recall taking many 'normal' photographs.
Birthday and Christmas pictures really didn't interest me. We
use to go down to my relative's farm in Southern Illinois during
the Summer... While there, I would spend time walking around,
taking close-ups of farm machinery parts, peeling paint on barns,
and other obscure things I found interesting.
When I was 19 I ended up in Los Angeles. Music and audio recording
were my main interests back then, but the photography and art
never went away. I would spend hours walking around the neglected
industrial areas of downtown, searching for interesting subjects.
That quest eventually expanded to the desert and other unique
areas that are ignored by most.
Recently I've started combining my interests of art and sound
in a couple different ways... You'll notice some of the photographs
on the site have companion audio accompanying them, which was
recorded at the location... Unlike full motion film or video,
I've found this to be an interesting blend of images and sound,
which still leaves room for individual interpretation and imagination.
I've also incorporated my love of radio into my art as well...
"Sounds from the Ether" is a collection of random
recordings taken from the radio spectrum... Some have meaning,
while others are merely intriguing.
People have asked me many times to try and explain my work,
or find some sort of meaning behind it. I don't really try to
follow any formula, or set any kind of goal. I think it's just
part of my bizarre ongoing fascination with the mundane.
